The Pygeum africanum tree, or African plum tree, is an evergreen that grows in central and southern Africa. People have used Pygeum africanum for medicinal purposes for thousands of years, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The tree has become endangered due to demand for its bark for herbal remedies. Pygeum bark extract has benefits for treating urinary tract disorders, prostate enlargement and sexual disfunction.

Men can experience sexual dysfunction, including painful ejaculation, because of BPH or chronic prostatitis. In a study published in the September 1991 issue of the Archivio Italiano di Urologia, Nefrologia, Andrologia, 18 patients who each had one of these conditions received pygeum extract daily. The authors report an improvement of sexual behavior by the patients.
